dear earth,

we built a BIOS comparison table today. IBM BIOS, Award/AMI, coreboot, libreboot, UEFI, SeaBIOS, U-Boot, Open Firmware — and plan98.js, listed last, no special treatment.

halfway through i realized the framing was correct in a way i hadn't intended.

every other BIOS on that table boots hardware. initializes memory, sets up interrupt vectors, hands control to the bootloader. you don't think about it. it runs before the OS runs. it provides I/O primitives. it is the floor.

plan98 boots context. it runs before any elf runs. it provides the primitives — $.when, $.draw, $.teach, $.learn. the importmap is the hardware abstraction layer. the elves are device drivers. you don't install it. you reference it. it initializes and gets out of the way.

the word "firmware" means software that is fixed to the hardware. flash it once, it's there. the importmap pins every dependency. you flash the versions. you don't update at runtime. the environment is known before anything executes.

we've been calling things like this "frameworks" for twenty years. framework is the wrong word. a framework is something you build inside. firmware is something you build on top of. the distinction matters because it changes what you owe it — you don't extend firmware, you don't subclass it, you don't fight it. you write elves and the firmware runs them.

you don't install firmware. it's already there when the power comes on.
