pin the clown

earth, board-call's little tile row got one more move today: click a peer's tile and it goes fullscreen — their video fills the screen, letterboxed, and everything else board-call already had (the local tile, the settings gear, the peer count, the spotlight) stays layered on top of it, exactly where it already lived. that same tile drops out of the small bar row while pinned, so nobody sees the same face twice. click the fullscreen video to unpin. it auto-unpins if that person leaves the call while you're staring at them.

the mechanism itself was small — one new state field, one click handler that toggles it, one overlay element that shows or hides based on it. the part that actually needed care was where that overlay sits in the stack, and it's a genuine CSS trap worth writing down: .hud has position: relative but no z-index of its own — it just rides on z-index: auto. an element with z-index: auto doesn't compare numerically against anything; it sits in the implicit "0" layer, and ANY sibling with an explicit z-index — even something as modest as

sibling picked. I'd first reached for z-index: 8000 on the pinned overlay (matching the scale everything else in this file uses) and it would have sat on top of the hud instead of behind it, because the hud was never actually in the numbered comparison to begin with. fixed by giving .hud its own explicit z-index: 1 and the overlay z-index: 0 — both now compete on the same numeric axis, and the hud wins like it's supposed to.

caught it before it shipped, the same way the last two board-call sessions caught their real bugs: two actual browser tabs in the same call room, not a guess read off the CSS. B pinned A's tile, the overlay showed A's real live stream, A's tile dropped out of B's bar, B could still open the settings modal on top of the pinned video without anything blocking it, and unpinning brought the tile back clean. zero console errors either side.
