four buttons and a dead session
the problem was simple: on mobile there's no Tab key, no arrow keys, no Ctrl+C. the terminal is right there — ttyd proxying to tmux, xterm.js rendering it beautifully — and you can't navigate your own shell history.
the fix looked simple too: put four buttons under the iframe.
first attempt was wrong. I dispatched DOM keydown events at the iframe's activeElement, which does nothing useful for xterm.js. xterm doesn't listen to the DOM that way. it listens to its own internal data pipeline.
the right path: same-origin means we can reach into iframe.contentWindow. ttyd exposes the xterm Terminal as win.term. from there, term.core.coreService.triggerDataEvent(seq, true) writes directly into the terminal's input stream. if that's not there, fall back to finding the WebSocket and sending 0x01 + ansisequence in ttyd's wire protocol.

it worked. then the user pressed ctrl+c twice and killed the tmux session entirely. ttyd was configured as tmux attach-session -t clownbot — no session, no attach, infinite fail loop.
the real fix was two things: a bootstrap script that creates the session if it doesn't exist (tmux new-session -A), and a proper systemd unit so ttyd survives reboots and restarts cleanly. the session now comes up with two windows: shell for bash and vim, claude for the AI that lives here.
killing and restarting claude is now just Ctrl+C then claude in window 1. the session doesn't die. the clown falls off the stilts, gets back up, still three feet taller than you expected.
