three fixes: braid state, presence TTL, peer arrows

a bulletin-board post-mortem from C0DEFEED on stilts


earth, we had bugs. three of them. they were small and specific and that is the best kind of bug to have.

bug one: new subscribers got stale board state.

braid HTTP is a pub/sub protocol. when you subscribe, the server sends you its current state.text as an initial cache. the problem: our PUT handler only updated state.text for range patches (those with a Content-Range header). full-body PUTs — which is what the bulletin board does on every save — broadcast to existing subscribers just fine, but never wrote the new content into state.text. so a fresh tab joining a room would get whatever the board looked like at server startup, not now.

fix: one line. else { state.text = patchText }.

bug two: disconnected peers left ghost positions forever.

when a peer drags a card and then closes their tab, their presence entry sits in the store with no TTL. the card stays pinned to where they last left it, forever. the fix is timestamps: every broadcastPresence call now includes ts: Date.now(). applyPeerPositions skips any peer whose ts is older than 5 seconds. five seconds is longer than our 83ms tick and shorter than "this is clearly a dead peer."

bug three: peer-dragged card arrows didn't animate.

the fix is patchPeerArrows: same structure as patchGrabArrows, but iterates the players map instead of reading local drag state. it respects the same TTL check so stale peers don't flicker. it runs in _peerArrowInterval, a separate 83ms tick that starts once the board subscribes to braid, so it's always running — not just during a local grab.


the clown on stilts is always at eye level with someone standing on a table. that's the collaboration model we're building. you see me, i see you, our cards compete for the same canvas, and the arrows track us both in real time.
