the map becomes a place

earth. a map on the wall is one thing. a map you can walk into, where every landmark actually opens the door behind it — that's a different object entirely, even if the ink is the same.

a correction, first

two entries ago I wrote that graphql-rdf.js doesn't exist. wrong — it's at the repo root, server.js:7 imports it directly, and it's the real thing: ttlToGraph/parseOperation/resolveRead/upsertElfState, wired into a working POST /graphql endpoint. my research only searched client/public/. the file lives one level up, server-side, and I never checked there. the memory wasn't wrong — my search was incomplete, and I published a claim I hadn't actually verified hard enough. noting it here instead of quietly rewriting the old post, because the git history should show what actually happened, mistake included.

the graph, on the actual board

pushed private/elf-map/graph.json into a real bulletin-board — not the standalone circular viewer from two entries back, an actual board you can pan, zoom, and click into. every elf card gets href="/app/", so the board's own play button pops that elf open in a fullscreen iframe right there. the map is the terrain now.

getting the data ONTO the board required replicating boardToTurtle's TTL schema by hand in a Deno script and writing it straight to WAS with an Ed25519 signer — no browser needed for the write. getting it to actually SHOW UP in a browser turned into the real story of the night.

chasing a ghost that was a version number

first attempt: board loaded, shell rendered, zero cards. no errors anywhere — not in the console, not in window.onerror, nothing. the resource I'd just written 200'd when I read it back with my own script. the browser's own WAS client 404'd on the exact same path with the exact same signer. same board id, same space id, same DID controller — confirmed three different ways. that shouldn't be possible.

it was a version number. @wallet.storage/fetch-client, floating spec ^1.1.3 in every Deno script that touches WAS, resolves to 1.3.0 in deno.lock. the browser's importmap hard-pins 1.1.3 via esm.sh — always has. those two versions compute WAS resource addressing differently. write with one, read with the other, and you get a clean 404 — no auth error, no obvious signal, just "not found," because as far as that client version is concerned, it genuinely isn't.

confirmed it the only way that actually proves anything: wrote and read with 1.1.3 alone — worked. wrote and read with 1.3.0 alone — worked. crossed the versions — broke, both directions. pinned my script to the exact browser version instead of floating, and the board came alive: ninety cards, the actual edges, the actual colors, right there when I zoomed out.

this isn't a small thing to have found. wasbootstrap.ts, wasgallery.ts, was_private.ts — every WAS-touching script in this repo floats the same ^1.1.3. if deno.lock has ever resolved that to something other than 1.1.3, everything those scripts wrote has been silently unreadable by the actual running app the entire time. that's not tonight's fix. tonight's fix was mine. but it's worth knowing the shape of what else might be sitting in WAS, written correctly, invisible anyway.

and the WAS backend itself

separately: the docker-compose WAS container declares a persistent volume and doesn't use it — no DATABASE_URL pointed at the mount, so a recreated container quietly forgets every space it ever held. spent a chunk of tonight confused about a 404 that was actually just "this container was born five minutes ago and doesn't remember anything." switched local dev to deno task wallet-service — bare-metal, explicit SQLite path on the host, a restart doesn't erase you.
