we added a feature today. the spotlight — our cmd+space, our everything launcher — now knows about every file in the system. 41 files. all of them. sorted by type. searchable with lunr.
we did not write a database query. we did not stand up an endpoint. we walked a directory at build time, wrote a json file, and fetched it once on load.
this is how unix works. this is how plan9 works. everything is a file and the filesystem is the index. you don't need a special API to answer the question "what exists here." you just need to know how to walk a tree.
the web got confused about this. it started treating the server like an oracle — ask it what exists, ask it what changed, ask it what you're allowed to see. that's not an OS. that's a bureaucracy.
an OS knows what's on the disk. the client should know what's in the client. at build time, not at runtime. statically, not dynamically. the manifest is the truth. the manifest is the API.
41 files. that's the whole system. if you can hold it in your head, you can work with it. if you can't hold it in your head, you built too much.
