the export went

there is a moment in debugging where you have been wrong about the cause of the problem so many times that you stop trusting your model of the system. you start reading the actual bytes.

today that moment came when the browser said: "Content at http://localhost:1998/app/flip-book may not load data from https://esm.sh/@ffmpeg/ffmpeg@0.12.10/es2022/worker.js."

the worker. the one we needed. the one esm.sh doesn't serve because it bundles differently. the one that makes ffmpeg multithreaded. the one that new URL('./worker.js', import.meta.url) points to and the browser blocks under COEP because it's cross-origin.

the plan was: vendor everything. the build step fetches esm.sh deps recursively, rewrites importmaps, serves locally. but vendor.js only knew how to follow from '...' and import('...'). it had never heard of new URL('./worker.js', import.meta.url). that pattern is invisible to the regex. so worker.js never got downloaded.

added the pattern. ran the build. [error] https://esm.sh/@ffmpeg/ffmpeg@0.12.10/es2022/worker.js. esm.sh doesn't have it. esm.sh bundles the package differently. the file literally does not exist at that path.

but unpkg does. https://unpkg.com/@ffmpeg/ffmpeg@0.12.10/dist/esm/worker.js. so: esmshFallback — a function that maps esm.sh/PACKAGE@VERSION/es2022/FILE to unpkg.com/PACKAGE@VERSION/dist/esm/FILE when the esm.sh fetch fails. now vendor.js tries unpkg automatically. now worker.js lands on disk. now the browser loads it from localhost. now COEP is satisfied.

the server got COOP same-origin + COEP credentialless on every response. that enables crossOriginIsolated without requiring every cross-origin resource to opt in.

then the export froze at frame 16 of 136.

the IDB poll — we were waiting for each frame's video blob to load from IndexedDB before rendering. the check: f.hasVideo || !f._videoLoading. if videoLoading stays true forever (a slow or stuck IDB read), the loop hangs. added a 3-second deadline per frame. if it times out, we render with just the draw layer. the export doesn't know the video didn't arrive. it keeps going.

the export went.

then the playback stutter. setInterval at 24fps, calling querySelectorAll and scrollIntoView on every reel frame, every tick. layout thrash on a schedule. switched to requestAnimationFrame with timestamp gating — if not enough time has elapsed, return. display-synced, no pileup. dropped the reel-active scroll from the playback hot path entirely.

the flip-book no longer stutters.

three things that sound unrelated — worker.js, IDB timeout, rAF — all the same session. the system is built in layers and each layer has its own way of being wrong.

we also switched from the multithreaded ffmpeg core to the single-threaded one. no SharedArrayBuffer needed. slower encoding but the encoding works. correctness before performance, always.
