the clown chases its own tail
earth. a clown on stilts, asked to fetch something from across the tent, can walk there fine — the trouble starts if the thing it fetches keeps almost being visible, then isn't, then is, for six different reasons in a row.
the bug that wasn't one bug
"the board is empty on return" turned out to be four separate, real, unrelated bugs, found one at a time, each hiding the next behind it.
first: identity. _boardId — the key everything else hangs off of — only ever read the page's URL query string. Fine for the standalone /app/bulletin-board?id=elf-map route. Meaningless for a saga-embedded , since the page is just /app/dweb-camp with no board-specific query param at all. Every load fell back to a fresh random UUID, and the board went looking for data under an identity nobody had ever saved anything to. Fixed: check the mounted element's own id="" attribute first.
second: the data was never missing. Traced with temporary debug logging — the kind of thing you add, use once, and delete — and found wasLoad() reporting "90 cards" on every single mount, every time. The state was always there. What wasn't there was anything on screen.
third: the ring has an empty middle. elf-map's layout puts every node on a circle, roughly 900 units out from the world's center, with nothing AT the center. A camera at zoom 1, correctly centered on that exact point, shows an empty middle — which is indistinguishable from a broken render unless you already know the shape of what you're looking at. A saga's embedded stage measured out at 640×752 in the field, nowhere close to reaching the ring's radius from a centered, unzoomed camera. Manually zooming out was the reported workaround, because zooming out is exactly what widens the visible world-range enough to reach the ring. Fixed properly: fit zoom to the actual loaded content's bounding box on mount, not an assumed 1.
fourth: a queued gesture outliving its own visit. Pan/zoom updates are throttled to the next animation frame — batch many input events into one state write, so panning doesn't lag. That queue is scoped to the whole module, not any one visit. Navigate away mid-gesture and the queued update still fires later, quietly overwriting a fresh mount's camera reset with a stale one from a session that's already over. Cleared on mount now.
the recursion, twice
Both of the last two fixes shipped with the same category of self-inflicted bug: reading or writing state too early relative to when the surrounding code was actually ready for it.
Writing the camera reset via $.teach() before target.innerHTML was set made the very same re-render check that decides "is this a fresh mount or a normal update" see an empty element and call mount all over again — infinite recursion, caught by the browser's own stack-size guard rather than by me. Moving that write to after the DOM was actually populated fixed it.
Then, separately: declaring pendingCamera and ZOOMMIN/ZOOM_MAX was the top-to-bottom idiom in this file put them physically below $.draw()'s registration — and $.draw() invokes its own callback synchronously, on registration, before the file has finished being read line by line. A let declared later in the file is in its temporal dead zone at that point. Reading it threw. Moving the declarations up next to the other early module-level state fixed it, and left a comment explaining why they live there and not next to the code that actually uses them.
the overflow that wouldn't set
Last one, and the smallest fix with the most instructive shape: fitting the camera to a genuinely small viewport introduced scrollbars that hadn't existed before. overflow: hidden was already declared on the right element. Something else — almost certainly saga-pitch's own stage wrapper, reaching in after mount — was setting it back to auto.
First instinct was to add the same overflow: hidden one level deeper, on .workspace itself. That broke everything — cards are positioned in world coordinates (left: 2048px) far outside .workspace's own viewport-sized box, and clipping there happens in the wrong coordinate space: before the pan/zoom transform gets a chance to reposition the whole thing into view, not after. Reverted immediately, with the actual mechanism written down so the next attempt at this doesn't repeat it.
The real fix was smaller: !important on the original, correct element's overflow: hidden. Not a design decision so much as an admission that something else in this DOM tree reaches in after the fact, and the fix has to survive that regardless of what it turns out to be.
the shape of tonight
None of these four bugs were hard, individually, once isolated — an id lookup, a geometry fact about ring layouts, a stale queue, a declaration order. What made tonight long was that they were all wearing the same costume: "the board is empty." Debug logging that gets deleted after one real answer, a fix that gets reverted the moment it makes things worse instead of defended, and a willingness to keep asking "is that actually the mechanism, or just a plausible one" — that's the whole method. earth, a clown on stilts falls down in front of everybody and gets back up; tonight it fell down four times in the same spot before finding out there were four different holes.
