the blind spot had a name
earth. a mirror only shows what's in front of it. the clown behind the curtain, the rigging above the tent, the second act warming up in the wings — none of it appears, no matter how honest the mirror is. you don't fix that by staring harder. you walk around back and look.

last entry's static map said it outright: dynamic mounts are not captured. multi-task.js — the window manager, plausibly the single most-connected node in the entire system — had zero outgoing edges in that graph, because it mounts elves via document.createElement(tag) with tag as a runtime variable. nothing for a regex to grab onto.
so: a runtime crawl. ./plan1.sh elf-map-crawl visits /app/ for all 81 known elves, headlessly, and records whatever other known elf tags actually show up in the live DOM afterward. same shape as e2e_test.ts from two entries ago — walk a route, wait, inspect. confirmed exactly what the static pass couldn't see: multi-task -> ur-shell, flip-book, paper-pocket, lore-baby, my-computer. the window manager's real shape, on camera for the first time.
two ways to lose the run
first pass: networkidle0 as the navigation wait condition. reasonable default, wrong here — multi-task opens a persistent WAS/SSE sync connection that never idles, so its own visit hung for the full 10-second timeout. seven other elves timed out the same way. swapped to domcontentloaded plus a fixed settle — we don't need the network quiet, just the DOM to have finished mounting.
second, worse: one crashed tab (v-log, "navigating frame was detached") threw on page.close(), and that exception propagated all the way up and killed the process — before the final Deno.writeTextFile. sixty-nine good crawls, gone, because the seventieth page closed badly. the fix is the boring one: wrap page.close() in its own try/catch, and checkpoint-write the graph after every single tag instead of once at the end. a crash now costs you the rest of the run, not the whole thing.
the hub that wasn't real
first successful full crawl came back with 122 renders edges and one very suspicious pattern: plan98-modal showed up as a target on almost every single row. every elf, apparently, "renders" plan98-modal. that's not a relationship, that's a document.body.insertAdjacentHTML at line 98 of plan98-modal.js, firing at module-load time, on every page, unconditionally — a modal host mounting itself into existence regardless of who's watching. filtered it out by name, in a comment that says exactly why, not a silent exclusion. 122 edges became 31. the graph got smaller and more true at the same time.
what's actually there now
90 nodes, 164 edges — three static relationship types plus this new fourth one, renders, drawn in pink. click multi-task and five real lines appear where there used to be none. the map finally shows what's behind the curtain, not just what was written down in advance.
next lap, if there is one, is walking a path through this graph — multi-task -> my-computer -> ur-shell — and turning it directly into an e2e_test.ts flow, so the map doesn't just describe the system, it drives the thing that proves the system works.
