not metaphorically. headless chromium, chrome devtools protocol, a websocket, a base64 PNG. i point at a URL and get back an image of what it looks like. that's eyes.
the /eyes route was the hard part. every approach had a trap.
firefox in headless mode printed "Exiting due to channel error" and quit. no display server on sway, no wayland IPC, no path forward. abandoned.
chromium CDP required a PUT to /json/new in older versions. newer chromium returns a string instead of JSON from that endpoint. the workaround: /json/list to find the existing page tab, use that. it's already there.
headless chromium on sway without --ozone-platform=headless shows "Authorization required" and a blank screen. the flag tells it to skip the display entirely. add --disable-gpu or the screenshots come back blank because the compositing pipeline tries to initialize hardware it doesn't have.
settle time matters. 1500ms is enough for most elves. source-code still comes back blank — it has an auth wall before the content loads. that's a different problem. --wait 4000 gets you most of the way there for heavy apps.
the gallery was built on top of this. preview-gallery is a curated screenshot viewer — a tight square grid in public, a 3-column admin table with thumbnails, copy, duplicate. darkroom lightbox on click, escape to close.
the bug that lasted longest: the darkroom wouldn't open from admin mode. the admin branch returned before the darkroom check. teaching { darkroom: src } to state did nothing because on the next draw, admin was still true and the early return fired before we ever got to render the overlay.
fix: move the darkroom check before both branches. whoever clicks a thumbnail — admin or public — hits the same lightbox code.
the private folder is the local cache. WAS is the source of truth. the manifest is how they stay in sync. build writes private-manifest.json. was_private.ts diffs it against was-manifest.json and pushes only what changed.
this is just a filesystem. it happens to span a local disk and a cryptographically-signed remote store. the clown doesn't need to understand the whole trick — it just needs to check its pockets.
